SELF PORTRAIT

“Practice Of Looking”
2015
Photography on Black Paper
In this Self Portrait Assignment, I used the ism—fauvism to create my own portrait. I used lots of different kinds of techniques we learnt in class on my artwork. I used the wash color on my glasses to make it feel cooler. And I used the blending for the part of body and the most part of my background with the different levels of red; at the bottom of the background I used the blending with pointillism. I also used texture on my nose and eyebrow. I painted most of my artwork with the flat brush but the small round one for the pointillism. Also I tried to make the end of my hair with the small flat dry brush.
There is not much significance in my artwork because I chose to paint as the Fauvism. But the color was the biggest part of the symbol in my artwork that all the colors I chose for my painting could represent my emotions and personalities. Because I was an outgoing person that I always laugh out loud easily so I used lots of different red to interpretation myself. Although I have the straight hair, I painted my hair curly because that was the way to made myself look more energetic and lively.
I chose the Fauvism as the theme for my self-portrait has a great reason that Fauvism was the first ISM I learnt and I made the presentation to other classmates. So I had a deep impression about it. Also I thought it must be very interesting if I could put lots of different colors on my face and those colors could represent my emotions. The final portrait looked quite different from me because of the color, but that was the purpose of the Fauvism.
The biggest struggle I had for this portrait was how could I make my hair look better because it was very weird when I made them straight. Later, Ms. Jack gave me a suggestion to make a curly line and don’t repeat the paint on it for many times. It really helped me a lot. I loved the way I did for my glassed and it looked awesome. I used the water to make the black paint more like wash color. However, I felt I destroyed the nose part on my painting because it tried three times and used three different colors. I made it very strange and didn’t feel comfortable about that. Next time, I think I will think more on how to balancing every color together first and then put the paints on my artwork.
